The Problem with Traditional Disaster Assistance Methods

When thousands and thousands of people are affected by a disaster, we truck and fly supplies to them where the disaster has struck. However, if the disaster is bad enough, there is no infrastructure in the area affected. No buildings, no supplies, no running water, no electricity, no passable roads, etc. Plus you also have to feed, cloth, and house the people who are doing the shipping of goods and services to an area.

I think we have it all wrong. I suggest that we move the people to an area that has infrastructure in place, even if it is temporary infrastructure - like tents and quickly constructed buildings, so that we can serve the victims easier and more efficiently. We could save so many more people that way, and make better use of available supplies.

It only takes one flight in and out to move people. It takes several flights in and out to supply people with goods.

That was the final decision with Katrina. Thousands were bused out of the area due to the problems associated with bringing supplies in and providing services and safety and security.

Just a thought...

Original Thinking?

Most blogging seems to be circular in nature. Bloggers blog about what other bloggers are blogging about, and so on ad infinitum.

So, even the following is not original:

Let us treat men and women well; treat them as if they were real. Perhaps they are.

By Ralph Waldo Emerson

However, if you think about it, it might produce some original thinking...

Poetry Mood

I seem to be in a poetic mood. So here goes...

Life is rushing all around me
People going here and there
I wonder, do they even take
one little minute to contemplate
who they are
in all their glory
do they even know
how divine energy
flows down to them
even now
in all their
rushing about?

Japanese Death Poems

I saw an interesting book titled "Japanese Death Poems" at the book store this weekend. It is a collection of poems translated from monks and samurai, who have written poems on the day of their death. Apparently, it is quite a tradition. There are some very beautiful poems in that book.

Here is a poem that I wrote, heh, however, it is not my death poem:

It's not the body
It's not the imagination
It's not the emotions
It's not the mind
It's not the unconscious
What is it?
Look where it is not
and you will find It

Online Library Gives Readers Access To 1.5 Million Books

Over 1 million books online! The Universal Digital Library:

For the first time since the project was initiated in 2002, all of the books, which range from Mark Twain's "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court" to "The Analects of Confucius," are available through a single Web portal http://www.ulib.org of the Universal Library, said Gloriana St. Clair, Carnegie Mellon's dean of libraries.

Wow, the free access to information is continuing to march along.
